Pakistani freelancers earned a record $1.76 billion in the 2025-26 fiscal year, up 78% on the year before, and AI agents are now moving into everyday freelance work. An AI agent is software that carries out multi-step tasks for you, such as researching clients, filling spreadsheets or drafting emails, rather than just answering questions.
The evidence so far says agents work best as assistants. In tests on real Upwork jobs, they often failed on their own and did far better when an expert reviewed their work. Here is which tasks to hand off, which to keep, and how to start safely.

Measure | Figure |
|---|---|
Freelance exports, FY26 | $1.76 billion, up 78% from $984 million |
IT freelancers | $1.16 billion, up 49% |
Non-IT freelancers | $592 million, up 188% |
July 2026 earnings | $175.4 million, up 45.5% year on year |
Estimated freelancers | 2.5 to 3 million |
Average monthly earnings per freelancer | About $53, up from about $12 in 2021 (finance adviser's estimate) |
The figures come from State Bank of Pakistan data. Non-IT work grew far faster than IT work, which suggests demand reaches well beyond coding. Pakistan Freelancers Association chairman Ibrahim Amin says freelancers need communication, business development and client management skills alongside technical ones.
What an AI agent actually is
A chatbot answers a question. An agent is given a goal and takes steps towards it: it can browse the web, read your files, fill in forms, use other apps and keep going until the task is done or it needs your approval. Assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Microsoft Copilot all now offer agent-style features.
The practical difference is where you check the work. With a chatbot you review every answer. With an agent you set the goal and the limits, then review at checkpoints, so mistakes can compound if you check too late.

Use agents for routine, checkable steps and keep judgement and client relationships for yourself.
Task | Hand off? | What to check |
|---|---|---|
Finding and filtering job posts | Yes | Client history, budget and scope before you apply |
First drafts of proposals | Drafts only | Remove invented claims about your experience; personalise |
Research and market summaries | Yes, with sources | Verify every figure and link |
Data cleaning and spreadsheets | Yes | Spot-check totals and sample rows |
Transcripts and meeting summaries | Yes | Names, numbers and decisions |
Invoice reminders and scheduling | Yes | Amounts and recipients before sending |
Writing and translation drafts | Drafts only | Have a native reader review, especially Urdu and Sindhi |
Scope, pricing and disputes with clients | Keep | These need judgement and trust |
Code, finance or legal deliverables | Keep sign-off | Test and review everything yourself |
Logging into client systems or handling payments | Avoid | Security and confidentiality risk |
Where agents still fail
- Alone, they often fall short. Upwork tested agents on simple, well-defined real jobs and found they struggled independently, but completion improved by up to 70% when expert freelancers gave feedback. Its benchmark of 322 completed jobs found agents finishing between 4% and 68% of the simplest tasks. Upwork's chief executive, Hayden Brown, says agents alone were "highly incapable" of completing work. A separate Scale AI benchmark of 240 freelance projects reported a 2.5% success rate, though that figure reaches us through a secondary summary, so treat it as indicative.
- Judgement is the weak spot. Tasks that need judgement and several skills at once broke agents in every category Upwork tested, because real clients give vague, shifting briefs.
- They can state false things confidently. One invented figure in a client report costs more trust than the hours it saved.
- Security risk. An agent that browses the web or reads email can be tricked by hidden instructions on a page, so never give it access to payment accounts, wallets or client logins.
- Confidentiality and rules. Check your contract, any NDA and platform rules before uploading client files to an AI tool.
- Low-end work is shrinking. Upwork's head of AI says simple jobs such as basic logos and short summaries are already largely automated, so freelancers who stay at that level face pressure on price.
There is a positive side. Upwork reports that AI-related work on its platform grew 53% year on year, and its chief executive expects work to become more complex rather than disappear.
A safe way to start this week
- Pick one repeating task. Proposal drafts or lead research are good starting points.
- Write what "good" looks like. List five or so acceptance criteria, the same method Upwork used to grade agents, so you can check results quickly.
- Let the agent do the first pass and review at checkpoints. Don't let it send anything to a client without your approval.
- Track time saved and errors for two weeks. Keep it only if the saving survives your review time.
- Move up the value ladder. Use the saved hours for client calls, strategy and quality control, the skills agents handle worst, and tell clients how you use AI where they expect to know.
AI agents for freelancers FAQ
What is an AI agent? Software that takes a goal and carries out several steps itself, such as researching, filling spreadsheets or drafting messages, and asks for approval at set points.
Will AI agents replace Pakistani freelancers? Simple, routine work is being automated, but studies so far show agents fail often without human review. Freelancers who add judgement, communication and client management are in a stronger position.
Which tasks should I not automate? Pricing, scope and dispute conversations, final sign-off on code, financial or legal work, and anything involving payments or client logins.
Should I tell clients I use AI? Check your contract and the platform's rules first. Where clients expect to know, being open builds trust.
Is it safe to give an agent access to my accounts? Keep access narrow. Never connect payment accounts, and use a separate account where possible, because hidden instructions on web pages can mislead agents.
How much do Pakistani freelancers earn? The finance adviser's estimate is about $53 a month per freelancer on average in 2026, based on 2.5 to 3 million freelancers. It is an average, and earnings vary widely.
